Judgements

A friend received a summons on unpaid debt and didn't respond does this mean he automatically has a judgement against him? This was on a piece of equipment that he had to let go back because his business failed. He also had another peice of equipment go back, but was never notified when they sold it or any amount he owed above what they sold it for. The company that never notified him of an outstanding amount he owed has now summoned him on the debt. Can they do that with out nootifying him? Can they get a judgement against him without notifying him of the debt. Can he do anything about the first summons he got and failed to respond to? He was just overwhelmed. He refinanced everything he could trying to pay off the debts left from the failed business, but he just didn't have enough to pay everything. Is there anything he can do now? He probably still can't afford to pay the full debt he owes these 2 companies within 3 years.

I don't think he even realized that by not answering it that it would lead to a judgement. He wants to work out a settlement on all of this, but is that still possible if they already have a judgement against him? I told him he just needs to get a lawyer and try to get all of this settled. How can he find out if he has a judgement against him?
