First I wanted to say thank you to all the people on this forum. I just settled with Chase on Saturday (124 days). I owed 33k and I settled for 10K (around 30%). I have never been late on a credit card in my life and I lost my job and have no income. I plan on staying away from credit cards in the future. I read this board everyday when the phone was ringing and it was this board that got me through.

I still have one card to settle with HSBC 11K and they won't budge. They want 50% ($5,500). It makes me so mad because I had signed up for services to get a business going (Business Coaching with Prosper Inc.) and I never received the coaching I was promised. So, my situation went from bad to worst. I was suppose to make money and now I am unemployed and owe them 11K for business coaching that I did not get. HSBC has not been easy to work with. They said you have signed a contract with Prosper Inc. I know it is not their fault that I didn't receive services, however you would think there is something they can do. My account will charge off in 5 days. I'm not sure if I need a lawyer or what?? Prosper won't return my calls or emails and they received all the money. What a scam!! Does anyone have any advice on this?

Congrats on settling with Chase.

Regarding HSBC, have you tried to submit a dispute; I can't understand why HSBC would not reverse all/part of the charge, since you did not receive the services? Usually a cc company will investigate the dispute and make a decision on it's validity. I thought that was an advantage of using a cc for certain purchases.

I've have faxed so many disputes. This has been going on for 2 years (Jan2008). HSBC had refunded our account this last summer. Then in August they put the whole balance back on and said that because we signed a contract it was our word against theirs and we have to pay. It doesn't seem right. We are not sure what to do at this point.

Congrats on the settlements! I'm always so encouraged when I hear that people are getting settlements.

As for the coaching thing. I would sue Prosper for not providing the sevices in the contract. The contract also binds them. So if they didn't provide them then they will have to pay you and then you can pay the credit card company. Some states have small claims court up to $10k so I would just go to small claims that way you won't have to hire an attorney to do this. Just show up with all the documentation like the contract and how many times you tried to get them to provide the services. This should be an easy win for you.

Perhaps you should consult an attorney in this matter since it seems it's a contract issue. I would think that Prosper would have to provide information as to dates of the services rendered, at the least. The attorney could write HSBC a letter and at least they'd be off your back for the time the dispute is being investigated. I would also report Prosper to the appropriate state officials.
