I have a lawyer calling me saying I have an outstanding debt due from 02. The org amount was $4995.00 and now after interest it is $9988.83. How do I get the lawyer who is not nice at all to settle for a lower amount?

If it hasn't been paid on since 02, depending on what state you live in, the sol may be out on it and for that matter it may not even be on you credit report anymore, if it has been that long. I would check the sol for you state. Yes, they can still try to collect past the sol, but they can't sue you for it.

I would be willing to bet that the guy who is calling you is not an attorney. I would suggest you pull your credit report to determine if this is being reported and by what company. If it is being reported then you need to immediately dispute it because it is past the 7 year reporting time limit. As suggested above, verify your state SOL and if you are in the clear send the guy a cease and desist letter.
