Mine situation is pretty ridiculous also. I originally had an AT&T cell account. Due to military assignment I was shipped overseas. Before I transferred, I called AT&T to discontinue service. Needless to say, they never did and charged me one extra month's amount (approx $35). By the time after going through military mail system, I got the bill it was 2 months later. I found AT&T had sent it to a collections agency. I tried to call the collections and was placed on hold, this call I was making was an international call and it quickly surpassed the amount I was supposed to have owed. I ended sending the amount owed and nothing more stating that I didn't even owe that amount to begin with. For some reason Palisades continued to tack on late fees not supposedly to an amount of $460, ridiculous! Just out of principal I refuse to pay but it keeps showing up in my credit report. I have written to the BBB and it is recorded on the credit bureaus that I dispute the charge. It is dated in 2005, which is also ridiculous because Palisades simply recharged me to refresh the original charge in 2004.
I would so like to participate in a class action lawsuit against them.

Haven't you asked them to validate the debt then? Also, haven't
Haven't you asked them to validate the debt then? Also, haven't you asked them for a satisfaction of debt letter after you have paid them?
