Can you be penalized for asking for debt validation?

After a debt is validated by a CA, is it required that you have to pay it off in a lump sum or is that just saying that you owe the debt and you still work it out with the CA?

Requesting a collection agency to validate a debt is your right, it is NOT admitting to owing a debt, it's asking a collection agency to PROVE they are able to collect the debt, how they computed the interest (if any), and if they are collecting on behalf of the original creditor or if they actually own the debt. All collection efforts must cease during the validation process and until they provide you with proper documentation. I've added a couple of links below for you to read up on:

Shazzers, here is an update for you!

I printed out my debt validation letter and sent it off to NW & A on April 8th by certified mail and requested return receipt. Today is April 16th and I just received the green card in the mail showing they received it on April 12th. So, now I'm waiting.

However, right after I got the card I had a feeling they might try to get ugly, so I contacted the site you referred me to for a free consultation with a lawyer. I just sent in my account of what happened through communications with N,W, & A, including the lack of the "Mini-Miranda" on the messages they've been leaving on my cell phone. To further assist my situation, I have two of the said messages saved in my voice mail. I'm just waiting to hear back from the lawyer now.
