I recently applied for a checking account with a local bank in California. I was denied due to an outstanding balance with Washington Mutual. How do I find this outstanding matter yet resolve it. No clue as to the past acct. number?

Exactly, I was in the same situation and went and pulled my chex systems report, found out who owned the account, paid it and in less than a week I was able to open an account.
A lot of banks are going after credit reports now too....the only other way around it is to find a bank or credit union that does not use chex systems or credit reports.
