Medical Un-Covered

I had a medical bill that was not covered by my insurance at the time without my knowledge. The claim was returned stating "unauthorized." This was in 2001, and in 2006 or 2007, not quite sure, my tax refund from the state started being taken for the bill. During the time from when I had the hospital visit up until that point, I had no knowledge that the bill was not covered, and had no opportunity to dispute it.
What the bill is almost complete, but I am wondering if there is a statue of limitation on this bill and if I can get my money back? I recently talk to the insurer at the time, and they said that the claim should have been written off and collection dropped after three or four years.
Is there anything I can do?

Wow...it sounds like you have a judgment against you, that is the only way they can garnish. Unfortunately you should have looked into this when you found out about it, because you would have been able to get the judgment vacated. You may have waited too long. :(
