Both settling with your creditors or filing Bankruptcy have their ups and downs. If you start with trying to settle your debts first, then you can file for bankruptcy if that doesn't work. Debt consolidation is also an option you can explore. Bankruptcy (at least in my opinion), whether chapter 13 or chapter 7, should be an option of last resort. Either form of bankruptcy stays on your credit report for 10 years and if you go through a chapter 7 bankruptcy, you can not file again for several years. The important thing is to research all your options before you make a decision.
