I got a call from the Law office of William Sokol telling me they were going to garnish my check. I went onto the Better Business Bureau's website it says that it is out of business. I didn't appreciate the threatening way they guy spoke to me.

I offered to pay in installments and he told me no they could accept $150 today and the rest had to be paid in full my next check. The total owed was $960 supposedly.

Has anyone else had this problem or gotten calls from this same law office.

first know that nobody except for tax or federal student loans.can your check be garnished without a court order.use ythe address on the BB site, and send this collector a DV(debt validation)letter.they now have 5 days from that call to send a letter regarding the debt.this place broke the law with that call.also file AG,and FTC complaints against this supposed law offce.btw do a search in the bar top right.there are a few discussions here about them.bottomline a bottomfeeder.

William Sokol left a message on my voice mail a few months back. I called him back, left him a message and told him to send me something in writing. I had to close out my checking account because of numerous payday loans that I couldn't handle. One of the PDL's he was representing was a loan for $300. I had paid $1200 back in fees. I wrote him back asking for a DV letter and notifing him that the lender he was representing was illegal. I never heard back from him again. I wouldn't lose any sleep over William Sokol. I also am picking up threads that he is a disbarred attorney

Seems to me I've read posts about some of the collectors/PDL's using the name of legitimate lawyers or names which are VERY close to the names of legit lawyers in a certain area; could be it's not even William Sokol who's calling you? At any rate, sounds like you're handling it correctly, I wouldn't worry about this loser.
