I had a Providian credit card about 10 or so years ago that was lost. I reported it lost when I noticed and ended up w/a almost $4k debt on a $1k credit limit. Now I am making payments to a law firm that has threatened to sue me. If the card was lost, why am I paying? What can I do?

Well, I think its already quite late (since you're making payments to the law firm) to deal with it. Every credit card company would have the provision in their credit card document that would free the customer from all liabilities of transactions occurred after the card was reported lost within a specified period of time.
