Old Landlord taking me to court

Now he says I owe him money about 1000.00 and he says he is taking me to court if i dont pay up and he is going to take the paper out today if I dont pay up.
Does he have a leg to stand on being there was no lease signed? How can he prove that I owe him money he never gave me a recrpt when i paied my rent so what can I do.

NC,I did giv e him a notice i was moving out i had to leave him voice mails about it cause he was he=ard to get in touch with but he knew i was moving . I paied in cash.

In the absence of a lease, you still have to follow state laws.

That is a month to month lease. You would have to give at least 30 days notice. You'll owe him at least a month's worth. What was your monthly rent?
