Hi, thanks for your reply
My CR has 3 collections that are paid off...one is from a Bally's account, the other two from bank overdrafts. All are 4-6 years old. I also have a student loan that is current, the balance is high though, about 20k. My car loan is new since December 09 but is also current. That is all I have. Please let me know if you need any specifics. I've tried getting those collections deleted, but to no avail

Have you tried like target or walmart? Gas cards are also easy to get....and for some reason I noticed that jewelry stores are easy as well. You also might want to try department stores.
May I ask why you do not want to try for a secured card? They are an excellent way to build revolving credit.

You could also try to pick apart your CR listings for discrepancies, but it can be a bit of a drawn out process and you may have to sue. It is a rather aggressive form of credit repair, using the laws to your advantage.

I think you're pretty much stuck other than continuing to pay your bills. Can you add more to your existing loans to pay them down faster? Also, I believe most negative stuff falls off after 7 years and you mentioned some of your stuff is six years old, so maybe it will come off, just be diligent about the dates.

You're saying there is nothing I can do? I feel like there has to be something.....I mean i'm not looking to get credit cards to go spend money i don't have, but i'm hoping to get an apartment again and a house one day and other things

I gave you a couple suggestions above. You can get easy to get cards such as department store and gas cards. You can also pick apart your credit report..many report items completely wrong, but that will require some research on your part on laws of credit reporting (the FCRA is your best bud).
I also asked why you did not want to get a secured card. A little 200 limit on a secured card will do absolute wonders for your credit score.

No Problem. It can be -very- frustrating. Just do a lot of research and keep asking questions here. We all are happy to help! It can be a maddeningly slow process, but it CAN be done!

Thanks again. Do you have any good tips on a gas card, or even a store or jewelry card? I searched a site called Who Gave Us Credit and saw some mixed results. I'm nervous to apply unless i think there's a good chance I could be approved.
I'm also going to take your advice on the secured card, i just want to make sure i can afford to keep 500 extra dollars in the account at all times...

For a secured card, you basically give the bank a deposit...you do not keep it in your account, they hold it in trust as collateral.
