FIA Address Error

When FIA Card Services inherited my credit account from Wachovia bank, they associated the account with a Texas address (I live in PA) and the wrong SSN (off by one number) and reported this information to the Credit Bureau. I never received statements from them and got what I thought was a "replacement" card from Wachovia which I was making payments. One year later, I was reported to a collections agency with my perfect credit totally wrecked. When I learned of this, I paid the balance minus all the late fees that weren't my fault and they settled the account. I still have the black mark on my credit and they are denying that they made the address blunder. I'm at a loss of what to do.

When they have the wrong SSN and wrong address, how as the account reported to your credit report?

My experience is that credit reporting agencies don't much care about things like correct SSNs and addresses. I was once somehow confused with someone with the same first name and a last name with two letters in common--e and r. He was twenty years younger. It took two years for them to remove the incorrect aka. They never did admit that they had made a mistake; never did say, Sorry.
So, it can happen.
