Debt settlement companies licenses

Are the debt settlement companies required to show their licenses when asked by the customers?
I have been reading this board for quite some time now and I have often come across the suggestion that you must check the licensing status of the settlement company or check the IAPDA certificates of the representatives to select a genuine one. But are the settlement firms bound by the law to show their licensing details to the customers?
I just want to make sure that they wouldn't laugh at my face if I ask for a proof.

Yes they are required to show you their licenses if you ask. And if they refuse, they aren't a company you want to work with.
