That is all fine and dandy Sam, but with hours and jobs being cut, people are already living on the edge. Sometimes it is a choice between paying the light bill or eating. Yoru suggestions although good are not necessarily realistic in this day and age.

If you are able to make your payments and just want to get out of debt fast, you should check out the Dave Ramsey stuff. He suggests a debt snowball thing where you pay minimums on everything but your highest interest debt, put the rest of your money on the highest, once paid off put all the money on the next one and so on. You can usually get out of debt pretty fast. Great system.
