I am new to all of this, and i could really use some advice... i called a debt settlement company that told me my debt would be paid off in 58 months and they charge a $50 fee (included in the monthly payment) which would end up being $2900. then i came across this site and decided to try and do it by my self but i'm really not sure how to start? My credit cards are with FIA (bank of america), chase, home depot and american express. My total is about $24,000. Advice???

Most of the creditors won't discuss settlement till you're current. Hence, you might need to fall behind on your bills before you can begin settlement negotiation with your creditors. However, keep in mind that defaulting on your cards would shot your score, which is a negative of debt settlement.

I did it, along with lots of others.
