First you will need to stop paying them and when they call explain what your hardship is - sickness, laid off, income reduction - whatever your story is. Once the accounts are past due 90 to 120 days then tell them that you are wanting to settle the accounts.
Read and read again this forum. I used this forum and settled 3 of my 4 accounts. Only one to go.
