My last payment to Chase on a $13K CC debt was in January. Today the website has $0 balance. Was I charged off? Seems too early for that. They are unwilling to settle with me.

Update on this. I have 13K with chase that I have not paid since Jan.
This morning Quicken would not update this account- error. I then logged into the site to see what was up and I swear, it showed my balance on this acct at ZERO. I thought- has it charged off?

Then, today in the mail I get a NEW CARD from chase for that account, even though the expiration date is not even close to expiring. The letter says "GOOD NEWS! Here is your new Chase card!!". I'm like WTF?

I decided to call them, which I have not done in a few mos. I tried to work with them early on and offered $5K on the $13K debt. They said no, we need 90%, you are not eligible for settlement. Then a month or two passes and they send me a letter saying to call them, they give me a 0% payoff, I say no thanks, they also say you are not eligible for settlement. I am crushed thinking I can't settle because I have other current CCs ($0 balance) and my long history of paying with chase.

With the help of this site I realize I was being TOO PROACTIVE in trying to settle with Chase. You need to let them come to you to settle. I decide not to call again and hope for a letter w/settlement before charge off. I really don't want a charge off.

But today, after receiving the new card and thinking I was charged off due to the $0 balance I call. This time I get a very nice guy who tells me,
- that new card they sent you is an error, you acct is already closed.
- Your account is not charged off
- The site does not show a $0 balance
- You are now eligible for settlement at 60%!!!! YAY!:-P I say thank you I don't quite have that amt, I only have $3000 I will call you back at a later date.

Also I went and logged into my chase acct again and this time, the total $13K was there. I guess the $0 this morning was a technical glitch.

So, it looks like all I need to do is wait another 2 mos or so. SO glad I will get to settle this! All I need to do is get rid of this chase and a World Financial Bank store card (who I have not heard from yet). Then I will be back on my feet!!!!!

I would be very cautious about NOT staying in touch with Chase. Most often, the best settlements occur as a result of constant communication. Most importantly, be consistent and firm regarding your inability to pay. Yes, you want to let them come to you, meaning meet your offer, but don't abandon negotiation altogether.

If you follow proper protocol, Chase will likely offer you a settlement of 35%, far better than the 60% offer you got today.

I had a great experience settling my debt of $130,000 for $40,000 (28%) with Wells Fargo. I followed the strategies outlined by Removed by Shazzers as solicitations are against TOS rules
m. Give them a buzz. Fair folks with a straight up approach to helping the consumer. Only cost me $1150 for their guidance.

Good luck!
