Apartment Credit?

What sort of credit criteria do apartments look for? Are there options for those with credit that's not great? Is it the same kind of pull that they use for credit cards or mortgage loans?

Thanks for your response. This has been a big concern for me, as I'm looking to move and am weary of the $30 application fees at various places and what they look for. I have had no rental issues, but then again I don't really see anything about that in my credit report at all, even the fact that i've had good rental history. Can you lend a little bit more information?
