There are two different meanings, depending on your perspective. Some people take debt settlement to mean any kind of debt solution program, others use it interchangeably with debt negotiation. Debt negotiation is were you (or a company on your behalf) negotiates with your creditors to get them to agree to a smaller payment in lieu of the full amount you owe.

Debt settlement is the process of negotiating with creditors to reach a lower payoff amount. There are so many questions and information about debt settlement that abound.

When I browse the internet, I see many people with different opinions on the topic. My say on the matter is that if an individual is falling delinquent on their accounts, it is MUCH better to settle with the creditors than to file bankruptcy. Fact is, for the rest of one's life, companies, insurers, employers, etc. can ask , "have you ever filed bankruptcy", but will probably not ask, have you paid back an agreed-to amount to creditors.

Fact is, if you can pay everything in full, have no hardship financially, then you really should pay back everything to your creditors.

If you are having a financial hardship, falling behind on your payments either to business creditors or personal, then it may be a good idea to get more information and find out if it is the right choice for you.

And as I state often on this forum, there is NO PUBLIC RECORD of settlement with the courts. While it may show "settled" on a credit report, we can somewhat control who sees that. Public records, on the other hand, are dished out for free or a small fee on the web and soon the whole world knows you were sued for a debt or filed bk.

When you fall behind on your payments due to some sort of financial hardship, debt settlement is usually the right path to take. It involves negotiating with your creditors to reach an agreement to pay a lesser balance in one lump sum. Negotiating your accounts yourself is not as easy as one may think. You really need to be aware of many different thing and creditors are usually reluctant to offer really good settlements to their own clients.

I am a representative at Rapid Debt Settlement and deal with things like this each and every day. Feel free to send me a PM with any questions. We are also currently ranked at the bronze level here at the forum. We all deserve to be debt free again one day. Good luck everyone!
