For the past two months I've been contacted by a group of callers with thick, difficult to understand accents calling to collect on a debt that I allegededly owe. For the record, back in June 2008 I filed for Chapter 7 and it was discharged in December 2008, I am debt-free aside from medical bills that I have currently and make regular payments on. (They are 95% paid off for what it is worth)
The calls that I have been receiving since late April / early may have been abusive in nature, often times citing I will be arrested at my place of employment or home address - wherever I'm found at the time by the arresting officers. I apparrently took out a loan of somesort accorrding to the people contacting me, but they have never indicated the amount that was taken out, the original lender, etc. The callers are extremely abusive and threatening, and for the past two months all I've gotten were phone calls, no written notices that I'm being collected on or any official papers that I'm being taken to court.
The first call that I received was from (213) 256-0408, however the Caller ID pointed to debt consolidation firm in Florida @ 561-242-2462. (The message that was left on my voice mail gave me the 213 number to call) Subsequent searches on Google for this number have led me to believe that this is a scam, although as with just about everything you read online I've had to take this with a grain of salt. Many of the people that report the calls say the agents were collecting on payday loans. I had payday loans, years ago, that were closed out after being paid. I don't have any active loans at this time and the bank account I have now hasn't had a deposit from any lending company since I opened it two years ago.
The 2nd number to have contacted me was 717-862-4080, and this time the person on the phone addressed himself as an officer. Again, no further information was provided about the debt when I called back, and I couldn't even get an address from these people when I tried. (And believe me, I tried!) The callers were just as abusive, less willing to help me sort out the situation. By this point I had already filed a report with the FTC and the Attorney General in Illinois, so I amended the report with the new numbers.
The 3rd number to call me was this past Friday - 302-861-0512. Again, another legal threat was made and no further information was provided. I called the number from an unrelated line and hung up, which prompted a guy to call that number back. I played stupid until we got to the point I asked him if it was a sales call, at which time the gentleman said he was with American Legal Services.
1) I can't find any business called American Legal Services with the numbers listed above
2) I don't have any credit inqueries from American Legal Services or other outside collections agencies in the last 90 days or two years.
3) I don't have any outstanding non-medical debt.
Has anyone else dealt with these people?

American Legal Services is related to Internet Payday loans, unlicensed/illegal lenders. It isn't a REAL company as far as I know, and that is based on some of the posts by other members who have had loans with illegal lenders. If you type the name into the search box, located in the upper right hand corner of this forum, you can read what other members have posted, the connection is online payday loans. I wouldn't get too worked up about it, you can't be arrested for owing a debt.

I have received so many of these calls and they are all very upsetting, especially when they call so much and call me at work. Their has to be something someone can do about these calls. I all the stress and concerns in our everyday life I can't believe people have the nerve to do this or time.

The last number that called me was 760-111-1000 and they left a number for me to call back 419-595-0793 saying that "this is officer Mike Warner" (I think that was his name) and that I needed to call him back. I have had to close all my accounts because of this threat and finally had to change my cell number. This is unbelievable.

The same company called me for almost a year now. They call me a minimum of 3 times a day from Sunday - Saturday. In 2 1/2 days they called me 23 times. They told me that they were calling on behalf of Pay Day Loan, Cash Partners of America, and Cash America. They use a different name every time they call. I have told them that I am not the person who allegedly took out a loan, that I do not know the person who took out the loan, and that the person that they are trying to contact does not live in my home. They called me 5 times so far today. The person that I spoke to said that if I wanted them to stop calling that I could either provide him with personal information (bank account information, a copy of my drivers license, or my social security number, along with my name and address) to prove that I am not Michael Tribbet (the person who allegedly took out the loan), or I could give him my credit card information so that he could deduct $2000 to pay for the loan. I have called the BBB and FTC and they cannot do anything unless I can provide them with their actual phone number and address. The CA number that they use is false. They are actually calling from India. I have repeatedly asked them for their address, phone number, and for them to fax me the information about the loan, but they either refuse to give me the information, or they give me false information. They have left threatening messages on my answering machine, and some of their conversations have bordered on sexual harassment. TIME IS MONEY so today I decided to keep him on the phone for as long as I could. I talked to him about everything from the weather to what I planned to have for dinner. My conversations with him grew louder and louder as he became more and more frustrated. Since this company is going to continue to call me I might as well have some fun with them. Besides, if he is wasting his time talking to me, he isn't making any money or scamming someone else.
