I was recieving 10-12 calls a day on my cell phone from Encore. I've been unemployed for over a year and my unemployment had just run out. I didn't answer because I just didn't know what to tell them. I have just enough money coming in to pay rent, power and phone. Finally I answered and made payment arrangements to cover my Old Navy bill. I hadn't used the card in over a year but other payments had to come first so my balance had grown.
All three arranged payments have now come out of my bank account. I thought I was done. I cut up the card and didn't think about it.....until I recieved another bill from Old Navy saying I owed almost $300 still. The payments made through Encore show on my bill. But apparently Old Navy was not told of the arrangement.
I have tried to call Encore several times today and, after being put on hold for about 15 minutes the automated system tells me my call can not be continued at this time and it hangs up on me. What do I do now?

I am assuming that Encore was posing as the collection agency for the Old Navy creditor? This is why it is SOOOOOOOOOOOO important that people make collection agencies VALIDATE the debt BEFORE you admit to owing the bill and BEFORE you make any payments.

There are a couple of things you should be aware of, one is they have your personal account information! According to the original creditor (Old Navy) they weren't authorized to collect on this debt? I would call a couple of different places at Old Navy to find out for sure, because sometimes it seems, depending on what day you call, or what department you speak with they are misinformed, so just make sure you call them again to verify, I would also ask them to put that in writing so you will have PROOF to show Encore.

Next, I

I just wanted to elaborate on the statement I made about Encore having your personal account info. If Old Navy verifies never acquiring Encores to collect on their behalf, your personal account might be in jeopardy, therefore, to be on the safe side, I would go somewhere else and open a new account, then close that one. I would never trust a collection agency (legit or not) with my bank account information, no way!
