Yesterday when I was at home I heard a women shouting my name though a open window, scared me half to death. She gave me some papers that said they were a summons and told me to call a number for a law firm and that if I didnt it would just get worse. But after looking at the papers I am not sure if they are legitimate. There is no case number, the papers look unproffessional and at the bottom of the first page it says This communication is from a debt collector. If it was a real summons wouldnt it say it was from the local county courthouse? Please help! Thanks.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but don't summons have to be issued by a process server, most likely from your local sherriff's office? Seems odd that.a process server would say call a specific law firm "or it would only get worse.". What's worse than being sued? unless that person meant reaching an out of court settlement.

Weird.

But yeah, I'd definitely go to your local courthouse because you have to go there to answer if it's a real summons anyway.
If its a fake summons, report that person to the police for impersonating law enforcement and/or an officer of the court.

actually alot of states allow service by mail.some even allow service simply by publishing it.you really need to check with your court clerk.if it isn't legit, then you can either send A DV letter,or sue them right away, but check with your clerk on their particular protocol on service.

Thanks for your help, but what is a DV letter? I will be going to my county courthouse Monday morning to make sure this is legit. I am afraid if this person who served me was not a real process server I have no way to report her, I did not ask her name. I am in the state of Colorado.

Thanks so much for your help. I have been pretty upset.:( I googled the law firm I received the summons from and it looks like they are pretty slimy going by what others have said. Thanks again.
