Stopped paying on 6 credit cards in May...will have problem trying to come up with the money to settle them all at once. How do I decide which ones to try to negotiate with first. They are Keybank, Chase, First National Bank, Capital One, Discover, and Bank of America. Thanks!

I liked to either start with the smallest, or tackle the biggest (and maybe biggest threat of litigation) first. That only works if you have enough saved up for a good lump sum or at least a down payment on a term settlement.

You also need to see who gives you the best offers at what time, which collection agencies have them..
In my overall experience, BOA accounts in 3rd party have been by far the easiest to settle and they practically give away settlements. The best one I ever got was with them, at 19% of the balance.

But see who's offering what, the general rule is to counter their offer with half of what they offered you, if they don't accept, you can try to meet in the middle. Good luck.

Greetings Cassie,

You've got a buffet of cc's.
I don't know what a Keybank or First National Bank are.

But what I do know is that Chase and Boa-the snake were my easiest to settle out with.

Carp One and Discover are tough ones to do.

I'd do the easiest ones first and go from there.

Good Luck.
Please keep us posted on your journey.

keybank and first national are both out of the ohio tri-state area I believe. At least keybank is. They will go into collections like anyone else, I don't have any personal experience settling those accounts though. I do know they are tougher to get the original creditor to stop calling before it hits collections.

Since Cap One is so difficult if you can settle that one I would do it. So I would start working on that one early. I had 2 cards with them. My very first settlement was one of those cards. the other cap one still hasn't settled and charged off at beginning of April and still hasn't been sold and they are only offering around 88% settlement. They are the only card to charge off before settlement so I would start working on that one sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the advice...my biggest fear is getting sued so I am very nervous about waiting for settlement offers. I just stopped paying all accounts in May. I have never been late on a payment before. How do you know if a credit card decides to sue and what makes some of them sue and some just turn over to collections?

I agree with Jabba....BOA was surprisingly easy...and so was chase....Chase was probably the very easiest. Try to hang in there...I waited until 4 months to settle my accounts....most won't do any settlements in the first 60-90 days and the best come after 120 days. you just have to make sure to settle before they go to a collection agency ...usually after 120days. Take care and please post your questions....we are all in the same boat and are here to help.

I settled with Cap one, BOA, citi, and Chase. It was not that difficult just nerve wracking...also try to change your contact telephone number before you are too late. My husband did that and it helped to have all the collection calls coming in on one number
