does the debt collector have to notify you that they are going to garnish your wages? I thoughtu had to be served a summons and then appear in court for a judgement

Most consumer debts require a judgment before they can garnish your wages. And there are different laws in every state. For example, i live in Florida, and my wages would be exempt from garnishment as head of household. We need more info to be able to give you accurate advice.
