credit histiry and grad plus loans

on experian i have a 143$ unpaid debt from 2005
on transunion a 500$ unpaid debt from 2006
nothing neg on equifax
no, i tried many many times (registered mail communication) last year to settle these account but the both debt owners just ignore me. i need to get rid of them to get the lons. what could i do? i have no idea what else to try and i really need to apply for these loans in September.

Well what you were told was wrong....settlements are made all the time by phone. The creditor then faxes or mails a setttlement agreement before the payment is made.
You have small balance accounts. No one is going to spend the time negotiating by mail.
