My husband and I have a lot of credit card debt. Some of it due to his cancer diagnosis, surgery, subsequent chemo and radiation treatments for the past two and one-half years and frequent doctor visits. Also because of paying utilities not only for our household but also for our sons' household of which we still own the home they are residing in which is a mistake as we well know now. We are retired and in a constant state of worry over not having a cash flow for emergencies. Also the stress of my husband's chronic illness is bearing upon us. We live in Kanawha County, West Virginia. Is there someone we can talk to about debt consolidation. We refinanced our house and owe for it in order to help with bill consolidation about a year and one-half ago, but we became embroiled in the same situation. We would like to avoid bankruptcy if possible but it may become the only way. I don't know how to consolidate bills into one payment to an institution as our present bank holds the deed to our house. What else could be used for collateral? We do own another home free and clear. I worry because I never know about the health of my husband. My retirement is better than his but his social security is more than mine. Could I go through my credit union to secure a debt consolidation loan or not. We owe approximately $50,000 is credit card debt. Is there hope for us? I am not sure as to whether my credit unioin would deal with this but the payment could come out of my retirement and they would not miss a payment at all. Can you help by giving suggestions. I do not want to deal with some company that is not registered with the State of West Virginia. I keep receiving information from other companies not from WV and I have contacted the Attorney General's office for verification as to whether they are registered to do business in WV. Therefore , any information you can give or suggest would be much appreciated. thank you very much.
