I'm fairly certain this is a SCAM. First and foremost, DO NOT pay them anything.

They contacted my aunt yesterday looking for me regarding a "subpoena." When I called the 980 area code phone number, I was connected to a woman who responded a "local" agency would call me about this.

Within minutes a 213 (Los Angeles based area code) called me and a "Brian Walker" was the "special agent" who informed me I have been sued by HSBC for a 2000 debt, I politely informed him I knew of no such account with HSBC and furthermore, even if I did have it, it was past the statute of limitations. Bryan told me I was wrong, because they sued me for fraud and malicious intent to defraud. I then asked for validation of the debt which he said would only be provided if I consented to a subpoena service by the sheriff which would give me the date to appear before the judge who may freeze my assets. He also informed me that they did not need to provide this to me as they were a law firm, not a collections agency.

Long story short, I contacted the FTC and my local District Attorney's office who both told me this sounded like a scam.

Good luck to you, I'm going to send a C&D letter to stop the harassing phone calls.

I just came home to a message stating that there was a restraining order in process and that I needed to call this 980 number in order to discuss --- and the woman leaving the message ended it by saying "good luck". Well before calling back I searched the number and found this comment from the previous person! Thank goodness I didn't call back, and I am going to report them to my local district attorney as suggested. Thank you

You may want to try the number first, I have been trying to call the phone number and no one answer. I HAVE BEEN PAYING OFF MY DEBT WITH THEM AND HAVE ASSUMED FINISHED with debt but no answer
