You can challenge entries on your credit report if they are innacurate or old! This will raise your score if you are successful! Most creditors purge their files every 2 years or so.

Do you recommend this as a tool for credit repair? Meaning, should we dispute negative marks that we know are being reported accurately, after having waiting 2-3 years, hoping that they have archived or purged their files and cannot challenge the dispute?

No, You can't delete credit from your credit report to improve your credit score. You have to follow credit score improving tips to improve your credit score such as :
1) Never make late payments. Make all payments on time.
2) Try to avoid credit card use.
3) Be aware from filing bankruptcy unless it becomes an emergency.
4) Do not apply for new credit card when you trying to improve your credit score.
This some tips to improve credit score. Be aware from all those things which will damage your credit score.
