Try to get in touch with American Express directly - at first they may say that they wont talk to you because you are with a collection agency - however amex still owns the debt so they will probably call you back because they often bring the debt back in before they ship it out to another agency - write an offer letter to them at their omaha address - they appear to be more likely to go a lower % if you can do it in a lump sum - you may get as low as 20% - however they told me they do settlements for as long as 24 month payback period at higher %s. Unfortunately i'm not in the position to resolve at even these levels right now - try to get to a senior person - the junior ones are only slightly better than the outside collection agency folks

Keep in mind everybody that Amex does not dismiss the debt like other cc's. While they will show "settled' on your cr, they still show the balance due.

Hi Dan,
We do seem to run into each other a bit on AMEX threads.
Could you please clarify your statement.
The way it reads to me is that after a SIF letter is received and funded by the consumer that AMEX will note the trade line as settled, but continue to report any unpaid balance as due.
This would be a violation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
Mileage may vary
do anyone know the answer?

OK. Two months now since I made the final payment to NCO for my Amex. Two calls to Amex and was told there was no settlement. Called again a day or two later and was told it WAS settled. CR only shows that I have a zero payment. It does NOT show any reference to being settled AND still shows the balance, which is the original balance less the settlement money I paid. They really suck. I do not expect this is going to change. So even when my cr is cleared up, it will still look like I owe them money.
NCI, yes, NCO , yes. I have dealt with both of the creditors.

NCI will take 30 to 45 % of the debt balance.
