What is a good starting point for a settlement amount? A credit card company recently offered us a 30% discount with a 6 month payment option...no more interest, late fees. This sounded good....????
Also..If approaching a collection agency, what % is good to start with for an offer?

I started all of my offers at 20%. This was a way to get them to initiate some type of conversation. Just remember that the way negotiation works is that they will always try to get you higher than where you started. On my one settlement with cap one it was like being at an auction. I'll do this, they said they would do that and back and forth. I finally started laughing and then talked like an auctioneer. The guy cracked up and we came to a settlement amount.

So if you have 50%, then start at 20% and see if you can settle somewhere in between, but if you can't you are at least within the range you can do.

Debt free to be.....I like your attitude...this post made me laugh out loud.....I wish I would have had a better sense of humor ....I was just so anxious...but I agree, the more human you are, the better. One of the women I worked with at Citi....got so used to talking to me during the settlement process....she said "maybe she'd come over for a barbeque." LOL....guess I wasn't such a stiff after all.....
