My husband keeps getting calls from NAFS on his cell phone (which he uses for work). Worried he might get into trouble for answering. They say we owe about $400 for an old Verizon account back 19 years ago. Is that silly or what? The guy who keeps calling is very rude and yells! We definitely don't owe anything. How do we get them to stop the calls?

Since your debt is more than 10 years old, it'll not dent your credit score much. Moreover, paying an old debt is like making the old debt new again. Receive the collectors' call for once and tell him that you don't want to receive collection calls any further. Tell him to send the same in a signed letter. In that way, you'll have the address and the contact number of the CA which will help you to check their credentials.

Send a letter to the CA telling them that by threatening you, the agency is violating Federal laws (FDCPA). Tell them that you know the SOL expiry date and further communication might force you to file a case against them with the FTC or States' Attorney General.

Always remember, not to acknowledge the debt as your own if it has passed the SOL. Don't worry, the CA cannot do any harm to you.
