I have received a notice from a collection agency on a medical bill from about two years ago. I do not dispute I owe it but I do think the amount is about $20 than the last statement I received from the doctor. I have looked at some of the sample debt verification letters but they seem pretty "tough" for lack of a better wordin that I am not disputing that I do owe it but I want to verify the amount. Does anyone have a sample of a letter to ask them to verify the amount? Is this the appropriate letter to send? I have until August 1 to reply. Thanks.

You usually have 30 days from the date of the letter you receive to contest a debt. All you need do is write them a letter asking for verification of the debt and the name of the orginial creditor. It is usually best to send it return receipt requested.
