Can I be sued for bad debt by asset acceptance

When I was a foolish teenager I got a credit card (in Florida) and ran it up, and eventually it was charged off. I believe it was charged off in '07. I now live in Missouri and I received letters from Asset Acceptance about this debt. I didn't respond, and the last letter I received was from a lawyer in this state, stating that they are working in behalf of asset acceptance and they demand payment be sent to them (the law office) or they may file suit. The charge off is about $600. What should I do in this situation? I don't want a lawsuit filed against me, but I don't want to call this law office because I feel I will be "strong-armed". Should I call asset acceptance and try to negotiate with them?

Asset Acceptance has an in-house attorney file its lawsuits in Texas. If this is the same in Missouri, you will be talking with someone in that company even if you call the lawyer. The lawsuits can be defended, but if you want to avoid a lawsuit altogether brush up on your negotiating skills and call them. Just make sure to get any settlement terms in writing.
