Debt Relief Companies...are they really a relief?

I secured a debt consolidation company before. They told me not to pay any more credit card bills, and they would negotiate for me. What happened was I was hounded by debtors...served papers from a sheriff showing up at my door. and eventually going into bankruptsy because of that company. Is there a good safe way to do debt relief?

If you search these forums you will see lots of people (myslef included) are settling their debts on their own.
But if you went into bankruptcy there should no longer be a need to settle debt unless I am missing something?
