This does not sound legit to me! Process servers never announce that they are coming! Why would they warn people? I bet if you call the number it will be a phony debt collector, probably with a foreign accent! Do not fall for this! They are getting more and more creative everyday!

I thought the same thing frogpatch. When I called the number back it just rang and after about 10 rings a fax machine picked up. I told the guy to come on over and he said fine, I'll be there in 2 hours and you had better have a witness and a form of id. Then he called my husband and harassed him. I didn't think that they'd call you first and when I told the guy that I didn't think process servers call first he laughed and that is when he said I need to make sure I am here in 2 hours.

Go out and do some shopping or take a walk. If you are really going to be served why wait around for it??? Making their job a lot easier.

I had gotten a call like this about a month ago. I returned a call that was left on my voicemail...you see I've had some debt issues in the past and I have been trying to take care of them. I spoke to a guy that told me I was being sued over a bad debt...he even provided a likely credit card (one that I had had) and offered to give me the account number. He said he could talk to the client and see if we could make a deal and not have to go to court. I thought that was great...I'm in the military and the last thing I need is to be sued. I called my parents and asked about borrowing money. But when my dad looked up the phone number they gave me, he found nothing but scam articles listed. He advised me to stop making contact with them and ignore there phone calls. They called a few times more and then it stopped. Now, today they called me again and even called my work (military). How do I get them to stop calling? It does not look good to my CO...scam or no scam.
Process servers dont call you!
Check your state statutes on collecting old debt. Most states do not allow debt collectors to take you to court after 4-5 years. Scam debt collectors will buy your very old debt and try to scare you with these "process server" techniques. they are getting more creative but don't fall for it. They have even gone so far as posting on forums just like this pretending to be people that had debt and were served by these people then paid the debt etc. They know we google the telephone numbers and they try to block that out as well with unknown numbers etc or constantly changing company names.
before you pay anyone, please check your state laws for debt collecting. they can harass you for years but they can not take you to court, garnish wages or serve you anything after a certain time given by your state.
These "process servers" called me as well from a California number 909 area code. The woman said she was with the process servers office and was trying to serve me papers. I told her they had called weeks ago and claimed they were serving me that day and I even gave them the correct address and directions to my home but they never showed up. She claimed I wasn't home or that they had the wrong address. i told her...well you have the right number so how hard is it to get the address? She said an officer would be out to serve me. I told her that my husband is a police officer and he checked with the court house and no such papers existed. She said it wasn't from the county or state it was from a company. I asked her the name of her company and she said Tri county or tri state and that i could stop the process server if i called this 1-877 #. I asked her why was she telling me this if she claims they already tried to serve me, she said to stop them. And I said is your company serving me? She said No. Then I asked her why was she calling and why did she start the conversation with telling me she had papers to serve me and claiming she was the process server.
I then started researching about these process servers and found while some people might be server for a legit reason for various things by a process server NEVER have they announced that they are coming and NEVER have they offered to try and STOP you from being served. A true process server gets paid when they SERVE actual papers, so you would think they wouldn't want to stop a thing with some 1 877#. In reality we are all catching on that the number they give you is to a collection agency that has bought your very old debt for pennies and is trying to scare you into calling to try and "stop" the process. Please check your state laws on debt clollecting and get names of these companies to report.
Fail CA
This company is CM Association Group based out of Corona California. They are licensed in very few states, and are in violation of several aspects of the FDCPA. Report any contact they make with you to your state Attorney General, and if you have an attorney, file suit. I put my phone on speaker phone, and use Sound Recorder on my PC to record all calls. They are a criminal organization, and its time to put them out of business.

I am a process server and I rarely call in advance. I have called on a few occasions when the person I need to serve is never home and the only way I can contact them is by phone.

Also, a process server can NOT stop service. They only serve once a case has already been started. We do get paid even when service is not made though. And you should NEVER try to avoid the process server. They are really for your benefit. If the law does not require you to be served you would not get advance notice of a case against you giving you time to defend yourself. If a server ever tells you to call a number to STOP service you know they are scamming.

Thank you for this! I received a phone call last night at 8:45 p.m.. Told me that it was a process server and then proceeded to ask if I was going to be home from 9-5 the next day. Then I really started to ask questions.and all he could do is give me a phone number and a case number. Hubby called and they gave him a run around. Said that a attorney would be calling him tomorrow. I think I will be calling the attorney general office..

Person called n left a message. Said their name was Mike Anderson and that they are a process server and wanted to set up a time to deliver a summons and then said they will give me 3 hours before they send a uniformed officer out. Sounds like a scam to me. Can't think of any reason what so ever of why I'd be sued, but even if I was... why would they call first. Dumb!! Plus the call appears to be from California and i'm in the midwest. They called from 760-637-3710 and left a number of 888-310-3751 to call back. I won't be calling back. I'm sure they just want private info.

In Florida, when they are serving you a Lis Penedens (foreclosure notice) some companies are in fact calling ahead of time. I'm a Realtor and it is legitimate. In regards to other things being served I don't know. However the phone number they left my client she could call back and they said she was being served, but the woman on phone couldn't say what it was. Sounded weird to me to, but they did in fact come out later that day and served her her foreclosure notice.

i just had a lady call a co worker of mine and gave her the information and gave her a phone number and told my co worker to give me the message that she will be serving me at work in 15 min. this was like 2 hours ago first she claimed she was with nation wide bill services then she was with united check systems, she did call here 4 times today and spoke with co workers. i had my boss call the number back as i am not allowed perosnal calls at work. the man that answered said he did not know why she would give me their number, and that they didnt even know who she was, but in the back ground someone yelled that she was a local process server.

I am a Process Server -
It really is disheartening (first time I've ever used such a word) to see that some ridiculous bill collector that is grasping at straws would stoop to such a level as to pose as a process server. Despite popular belief, Process Servers are completely neutral parties. IF a process server calls you and you answer and agree to a meeting, he/she will not be 2 hours late. They will be on-time and will certainly yes sir/no sir you to near death.
We deal with people cursing us, threatening to burn our houses down, our lives, and our families. We never know if what we are delivering will be the straw that breaks the camels back. will they go through with it? Will they kill me and my family? Will they burn my house down? Will they burn my house down tonight while me and my family are sleeping?
We receive threats almost every day and were threatened by people that have seen us, know our name, company, and the vehicle that we drive.
For a bill collector to pose as ONE OF US while hiding behind a phone is quite sad.

It is pretty unbelievable that this can happen. I actually received 1 call yesterday, and a 2nd call today from someone who claimed to be a process server and gave me a phone number of 855-666-1469 to call back to try and cancel the delivery of the paperwork he was supposed to be serving to my home or work. Of course I googled the phone# and nothing came up, and both times he called me the phone number came up restricted. At first, I was kind of alarmed to think this could actually happen, but then I sat back and thought about it logically, and realized this was just another scare tactic to try and get me to call back and get some kind of money out of me. What made me come to this conclusion was
1) I have been served before by a legitimate creditor who had made several attempts to notify me by mail, but when I was actually served it was on a random Thursday night with no call ahead warning. Its not the process server's job to warn people, its their job to serve the paperwork and thats it.
2) This guy mentioned that he was the local "courier" in the city I lived in 3 years ago, not the city I live in now, which tells me that they don't even have my updated address. Everyone knows how easily one's personal information is obtained these days. So, if they were legit they'd know where I live now.
3) The guy sounded all nice in the beginning like he was trying to give me a "heads up" that he'd be coming by, but then by the end of the message he says something like, "if you don't call back it doesn't matter to me, I'll get paid anyway." If he was a neutral party as a process server is, he would handle any communication in a neutral fashion.
4) The call I received today was at 7:00am. I am in the pacific time zone, and its illegal to receive calls before 8:00am. So, this leads me to believe that this guy is not even located in my time zone and doesn't think I'm smart enough to realize that if he's calling me at 7am I'm going to think that's odd. So, either he is out of my time zone altogether, or he is just breaking the law.
5) He didn't even mention what company this is for. Any legitimate creditor is going to let you know exactly who they are. For all I know this could be something unrelated to any real debts I have. Who knows?
Bottom line, it sucks to have a debt and not be able to pay it. I went from being very successful and being able to take care of myself and my family very well to being on the unemployment line one day and struggling consistently for 2 or 3 years. It sucks, but it doesn't mean these people have the right to try and scare us and make things more stressful than they already are. Best of luck to everyone who is going through these situations! It will get better :)
