This isn't exactly accurate. There are numerous types of bills that occur due to a hospital stay. You'll receive the hospital (facility) bill, the bill from your attending physician, a bill from any specialist (surgeon, cardiologist, etc.) who may have seen you, a bill from an ER doc (if applicable), a bill for x-rays/diagnostics (if applicable), etc. Some of these may be billed through the hospital, but some won't.
So, calling the hospital's billing department won't help you with consolidation. If you are having financial problems, they may be able to help you reduce the amount you owe and set you up on a payment plan - depending on your income.
You could also call up all of these people and try to settle the bills for less on your own. There are plenty of tools available to you at this site for DIY settlement.
You could also use a consolidation company.
