Hi all,

I am reaching out to ask if anyone else has received similar calls from a heavy accented Indian male claiming to be representing a "litigation department"... from what source I have no idea!! This caller said his name was Matt Johnson (uh-huh) and his call-back number is 980-216-1375. I thought I saw some earlier posts talking about this kind of activity. "Matt" doesn't tell me what lender or collection agency he is calling from. But he DOES inform me of a "file" he has received on me and he will be forwarding this file to the civil court of my state on 8-24-10. Anyone else receiving similar calls? This was a voice mail I received yesterday, Friday 8-20-10, I didn't actually speak to "Matt".

I saw a report on cnn (I think) about this type of scam. Turns out the people running the show in one office they located were felons released from jail who became junk debt buyers and used old information to try to scare people into thinking they owed money with jail threats. In the report they were appalled that a convicted felon could so easily and cheaply purchase personal information of others, including SSNs.

Not sure if your call is this type of scam, but I think you can be pretty sure that it's a scam of some sort.

Many members have complained about the same situation, hang up, don't speak to them at all.

Ok, thanks to all. I didnt speak to the caller... he only left a message on my cell phone. I have already changed my bank info (last year) after defaulting on more than one PDL. Sometimes it is hard to know if a call is an actual scam or a collection agency wanting to speak to me about a legit loan I had that isnt paid for. In the case of the Indian caller, he never identified WHERE he was calling from, no agency stated at all.

Assume now that your personal information is at risk and your identity now stands a much greater risk of being stolen and used maliciously. Just because you don't pick up the phone and return the calls doesn't mean at all that they will decrease in frequency or hostility.

You have new banking info - these guys shouldn't be able to touch your funds without you knowing about it. That's good.

Change the phone number you are being contacted at. Just know that the crooks will call the references you listed on your loan app. If you can live with that, fine. Otherwise, give those people a head's up.

You didn't scare them. I assure you that they will likely call you again (and again) until they have either exhausted all their options for contacting you or you pay them.

i actually got them to admit that i did not owe any money and they said they'd take me off their phone list. that was 2 months ago and i haven't received a call since.

Even if they're using a U.S. phone number, odds are very, very good they're calling from India or some other country. If you want to know if they're a legitimate collection agency, ask them to send you something in writing on company letterhead regarding the money you supposedly owe (don't admit over the phone that you owe money). I'm betting you will never receive a letter.

yep. it also helps if you just inform them that you've already done research on their phone number (800notes.com is a great site) and that you know that they're a scam. i called them back and told them that i will contact the police if they call again, and they quickly took my phone number off the list.
