Hardship Programs VS debt settlement
Date: Wed, 08/25/2010 - 08:08
My quesiton is this...I have 3 cc (totalling about $35k) which are all about 90-99 days late...all of the cards are offering me to go into payments for a year at 0% interest at a reduced min payment. I don't have a lot of money to do settlements at this time, (I have about $5K...so I could maybe do one) so I am more than likely going to proceed with these hardship programs until I can either save more money up or maybe things will change with our income. For those of you that have done these...can you give me any pointers?
* Is it okay for them to do an automatic withdrawl or should I send them the payments?
* Will I ruin my chances of settling with them?
My main goal is to not get sued of course and try to settle these accounts.
Thanks so much!

Since they are original credit card companies auto withdrawl is okay. Doing this will not ruin your chances of settling them it will just prolong it.
Just remember it will take forever to pay off and 0% interest will probably only last for 12 months.
You have 5k and may want to consider stopping 1 completely and settling. 5k could settle $15,000.
Who are the 3 cards and balances on each??

I agree that these hardship programs are not great...especially because it will NEVER pay the balances off but I figured that if I can at least buy a little time to get some more money together, it will stop them from charging off or from suing me.
Here is what I owe:
* Chase $7k (they have offered to settle at 70%)
* Citi $11k
* At&t (citi) $18k
I was thinking I would do the hardship programs with the two larger ones and hold out for a better settlement offer from chase...

I have settled 3 of 4 of mine and citi was one (actually I had 2 citi accounts) so if it were me I would use that 5k to settle citi (the big one). Then they will see that you are willing to try and they may take pymts. on the other one.
good luck and keep us posted

I would offer at&t $3000 to settle in full. They'll likely counter offer you and then you could try working your way up to a $5k agreement :) If they don't bite, try your $11k card, then the $7k last. Start with the biggest one. Whichever one agrees, get on the hardship program with the other 2.
All great advice! Thanks... Do you think I have time to wait
All great advice! Thanks...
Do you think I have time to wait alittle while longer to take these deals? I am a little over 90 days late on these. One did mention that I only had 3 days to decide...but I sort of felt like they were just trying to push me into taking the deal. I thought I would wait until they are closer to 120 days to make any real decisions.

There's no guarantee as to when they'll charge off. Most companies wait until 120 days, some longer, some less. The 3 day deadline is likely because the end of the month is fast approaching.

Actually most wait 180 days before charging off. Wait it out and don't let them tell you 3 days left.

I would call 866-833-6398 they don't take any upfront fees and you pay the creditor directly and they only charge a small fee after the settlement letter is sent directly from the creditor or it's agent.
