Have you tried to settle the debt? Call them up and ask for a settlement offer. Since you are 4 months behind, you may be able to get a good one. Start negotiating from 25-30% of the actual debt amount.
Once they agree to your offer, get the agreement in writing. Remember that settlement will dent your credit score but since you have missed your payments, it will not affect much. Your creditor will either agree to a lump-sum payment or a payment plan. You should also ask them to report your account as 'Paid' rather than 'Settled' and get it in writing too.
