A few weeks ago I received a 3 page foldout letter that claims that I can be part of a class action judgement against a collection agency. The agency is known as "The Bureaus Inc."

It claims that a Todd Fike filed suit against this company and since I had a cell phone number that they used to call me using an auto dial system that I can receive some of the settlement money.

I can provide more information if needed as to other details. I have done searches online about this and nothing comes up, but that may be attributed to the name of the collection agency being a name in which many things can come up (Bureaus). The law firm listed, Burke Law Offices, does have a website on which this is mentioned www.BurkeLawLLC.com but I found nothing else about it which kinda surprised me.

It says in the letter that a fund has been set aside to pay those who take part. It says that depending on how many people make a claim that one can expect to get $30 to $90 out of this which makes me lean toward thinking it is legit or they would be promising more. The letter also explains how taking part in the class action will exclude that person from taking any action of their own but if you exclude yourself from it then you could still have legal recourse to sue.

So here are my concerns. I first want to make sure this is legit. I know that some collection agencies have shady ways of getting responses and though I don't think this is the case this time I just wanted to see if htey could even legally do that.

My major concern is this. Would my taking part in this class action better the odds that this company or any other might take action against me on the debt or would it not matter. I do recall getting a few calls from this company but not for a long time. I suppose they no longer have the debt. I was hoping to find that they were no longer in business. Anyway I didn't want to provoke them to come after me as "revenge" and only get $30 - $90 dollars.

Anyone with any insight on this, I will be glad to provide any further details if needed. I am going to call the law firm but I didn't want to take what they said as the be all end all truth as it is stated that they will also profit from the suit.

Did you visit there website that I provided?? It does look a bit pedestrian with only a small bold type text mention of the suit. I called the number today and it was an anwsering machine voicemail. It directly referenced the case after mentioning their name, nothing about contacting them for anything else. Maybe a number they established just for this?? Or it could be as you say. I wonder if I could go about contacting the court they reference in letter, I wonder if they could affirm this as legit. Other insight would be appreciated.

if there is a case# and a court that is presiding over this i would look into it on that end before proceeding.it does look fishy to me,but it could be legit too.

Thanks PDL, I am not sure what you entered into google, nothing came up for me. I am going to put a little more thought into it but I think I will send it in. I am going to make copies of the document though so I will have it just in case. Could you post a link on what you found on google about the case, I would be very grateful.

Found some information this time on the search.

Any thoughts on whether you suppose that after the violations that lead to the class action, could The Bureaus still possibly have the account. I just don't want to prompt action on their part by taking part in this when the payoff is so low. I would imagine they sold off the account, I sure as hell haven't heard from them in ions. To be fair they only tried to contact me on a few occasions anyway..lol

Hey all, got my check today in the mail for just short of $150 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not bad, I was expecting less, I guess many declined to respond. How about that, that's a first for me. Glad I took part, from what the initial letter said the Bureaus Inc had to provide an $800,000 fund for the settlement, ouch. It couldn't have happened to anyone more deserving, a JDB.

Cool to see some others on here also got a good surprise in the mail. I think Burke gets plenty of thanks as they get a big chunk out of this, but that is what it is. Mr. Fike is the guy I think should be applauded, he took the scumbags to court for violations having to do with auto callers and zapped them big time. I too was very wary when I got the packet of info in the mail, I started the thread with my concerns, and aside from this thread nothing else was written about this case online that I found. The packet said to expect $30-$90 based on numbers they gave as the amount of people they projected would respond. Again by the amount of the check I figure that a good number of people didn't get the notice or didn't respond.

All of the details were in the packet I received. The only thing one committed to by being a part of of the class action was that you surrendered your right to sue them yourself. The option was their to opt out of the class and retain your right to sue. That however would be too expensive for most of us to tackle so I am happy with the $146.
