I owe 27,000 on a Citibank card. I asked them to lower my interest rate and they would not. They are charging me 30% per month and my payments are $900 a month. I cannot afford this. I am 2 weeks behind on my payment and when I looked on line they added almost 2,000 onto my bill. My goal is to get my interest rate reduced so I can afford a reasonable monthly payment so the debt is payed off within 4 years. I am at a loss and do not know if I should contact them and work it out or use an agency. My credit score is very good now and I do not want to go through an agency that holds onto payments as my credit score plummets. I want statements from Citibank and the credit agency every month to verify that my balance is going down. Can you offer any advise?

A good DMP provider will meet your stated needs and goal.

You can also give it a go yourself by calling in and discussing your financial issue and ask if they will extend a hardship plan to you. Sometimes the hardship plans that are offered direct to the consumer have better interest rate reduction than is available through a DMP provider.

They may call you and make the offer themselves, given that you are a couple weeks late.

Best of success!
