I have recently been laid off and now need to cut my expenses. I have decided to just give my vehicle back to the bank. I owe 9500 on it and it is worth at least that or more. I was told the bank would auction off the vehicle and I would be responsible for the remaining amount. I have listed it for sale but this has happened pretty quickly and I don't think it will sell in time.
Since I was laid off they can not garnish my wages - until I find a job again. So I am worried about my bank account, I have a couple thousand in savings, can they freeze my balance? If I get a new job will they be able to find me and come after me again? It would be embarrassing to say the least. Also I have a decent tax return due next year, can they take it from me?
As I have read a few article here already I believe they can freeze my bank account. So I can just open a new account they don't know about and that should keep them away from my money, right?
I don't care about my credit since I am someplace in the 400s lol.

My sister was faced with this situation and when she called the bank, a rep actually told her that its best to stop paying and have it repo'd unvolunterily. Then she won't owe anything, although it will show up on her credit as a blemish but so does giving your car up. I dont' know if its true but she did just stop paying and that was 3 years ago and she has not had any adverse actions.

It worry's me that I think your right. If I left the state I think I would be out of their radar but otherwise I would expect a knock on the door of my next employer. I paid another month today and put my vehicle up for sale. Anyone want a Jeep Liberty 2006 for $9000 thats a steal. Thanks for all the response.
