What if my area code is in a different time zone then my address??

If your area code is East Coast and you actually live on the West Coast, you're going to have to tell them that. They can't read your mind. If the only contact info they have for you is your phone number, it's reasonable for them to assume that if you have a CA area code, you're in CA.

Hence, you might receive a call at 11:00 p.m. in NY because it's only 8:00 p.m. in LA.

Yes, I agree to what OhioGal posted. This, I think, is a small loophole in the FDCPA rules. The rule is not conclusive. I heard from somewhere that FDCPA is planning to bring in some changes in the rules keeping the technological changes in mind.

Yes, you should contact the debt collector and tell them about the difference of the time zones.

This has been an issue for years, even when I was collecting. We called based on the area code on the file for new files placed with us. We had to use professional judgement when a file came with a phone with area code that did not match or come reasonably near the address on the file.
