I have a original creditor that is trying to collect on a debt that was sent to collections over 5 years ago. I never received validation of debt from the collections agency and now I have a letter from the original creditor. Can they do this? I live in Iowa and I heard that the statue of limitations is 5 years for credit cards. Is this true and if so what is my next step?

Thanks to any help.

It was likely never "sold" to a CA, rather assigned. If the OC is contacting you, they still own the debt and are looking for payment. Do you owe the debt? Are you disputing the amount they say you owe? Have you tried to settle for a lesser amount? SOL in Iowa is 5 years from date of last activity.
