What are my rights reguarding law offices and debt colletion. They want the payment in full and I am not prepared to pay that.

Jessica,

Know your federal rights regarding debt collection when you are dealing with the law offices or the collection agencies.

Before you make any payment agreement, the law office must serve you the complete details of the debt within 5 days of placing the initial communication with you.

After you have reviewed each of the items and found to be correct, make payment arrangements with them. If you find any of the items to be incorrect, dispute with the company. They will verify it with the original lenders and give you the corrected info.

Remember, you have the legal rights to refuse payments till the account is properly presented in front of you. Paying off the debt as early as possible will improve your credit ratings. Advance them with some money and assure them that you will stick to your payment plan. Once the debt is paid off, your credit file will be updated.

You should do all your correspondences in writing with the law office. Send letters through certified mail with return receipt requested. Keep everything documented in a file for records.
