Alicia, the best thing to do is to send the collection agency a debt validation letter, then they will contact the original creditor and send you all the info on the account. I would also contact the original creditor, find out when they sent it to the CA and how much it was when they turned it over to them. If it is an internal CA, then I would try to see if I can start working with the original creditor again, sometimes you can get them to take the account back if it hasn't been to long. Anything you send to the CA should be sent certified mail, return receipt requested. Hope this helps.

Adding one more thing here, you can also pull the latest copy of your credit report from all the three bureaus and do an extensive review. All the account details along with the creditors or the collection agencies will be listed in it.
You can frame one debt validation letter (samples are available in this forum) and send it to the CA. They must give you the details in writing before you make any payment agreement.
