i have been told by a creditor that I cannot do debt management and negotiations by myself. I would have to have some type of agency on my behalf. does that carry water

As to paraphrase your metaphor......

You can do it yourself.
Debt management requires mucho discipline.

Debt negotiation (settlement) can certainly be done by you.
(with a little help from your forum friends)
