Obviously it isn't a legit law office as any Attorney would know better than to advise you to get a criminal Attorney, as owing a debt is not a criminal matter, it's a civil one. You can't go to jail for owing a debt, period. You need to file a complaint against them with the FTC and your state Attorney General's office and this would probably be a good time to do so since it's election time. Gather as much information as you can about this law office and immediately file a complaint, this can be done online very easily. Meanwhile, if this law firm calls again let them know what your intentions are regarding filing complaints.

People do go to JAIL for owing money. Law Firms are now using subpoena's to require a person to produce financial statements post judgment. When the person fails to show they file a motion for contempt of court and then when or if the person is arrested the purge is usually a portion of the debt they owe. Now people do go to jail for owing money. It is rare but it is happening more today than yesterday. Do not ignore any lawsuits or subpoena's. It could come back to bite you.

I goggled Bart Thompson Law Office and I didn't come up with a law firm. I saw Standford Law School. Goggle this name for the state your in to see what comes up. I've had a similar call, pretty much saying the same thing and the person has a very heavy accent, difficult to understand and threatens me. I have filed a complaint with the FTC and all that happens is this person started calling from a different phone number. If this company is legit don't ignore them.

I kind of was thinking your same advice, It just really upsets me, and worries me, but I have already filed a complaint with my local prosecutor, BBB and the FTC, the prosecutor's office gave me a couple of other places to contact, thanks so much for everyone's advice, I guess I will just wait and see what happens

I found it through the BBB, it is located in Albany New York, and claims they are collecting for cash partners of America, which is also in New York, yeah he told me I would lose my job on Friday, well I am still working, how do these people get information, he knew the last 4 of my ss# and bank, email, weird huh??

ya i would like to know how you could go to jail when the debt you have you are trying to take care of it. also if they call you and you ask them to send a written letter to you with the info you want. how could that be legal. or you ask them not to call you at your employer but they are still calling everyday looking for you. Is that also legal.

Your example doesn't even make sense. In one breath you're saying that people are going to jail for not paying debt. In the other you're saying it's for contempt of court. Which one of these scam companies do you work for? Plus, as Paul said - no one is advising that you should ignore an ACTUAL lawsuit or subpoena. We're simply saying that if someone calls you and tells you you're going to jail for not paying a debt, they're full of $h!t!

It's a scam. A criminal attorney? LOL. That right there tells you everything. Not paying back a loan would be a civil matter, not criminal. They would just serve you papers if you were being sued. Hang up on them.

You have no clue whatsover. We don't have debtor's prisons. Owing money is a CIVIL matter, not a CRIMINAL one. Hello?

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but I don't suppose that's a problem for you.
Absolute Scm!
Ha! It's a total and absolute scam. I got the exact same call, and there's a million things that would send up a red flag. First of all, I searched thru my entire email, and I don't have any emails with a "From" of Cash Partners of America. Second, if you google them, you'll find a page from the BBB, giving them an "F". Third, google the "law firm's" name, and as Scatters said, nothing legit comes up.
And further, also as Scatters said, you DON'T go to prison for owing money, there's no "debtor's prison" in America, it's a civil matter, not a cimininal one. I spoke to the sherriff's dept where I live, and they said they've had a number of calls like that. If it was legit, they'd have had an attorney's office call you, send you certified letters, etc. They would NOT have just communicated via email. They only way you'd be arrested is if you were sued, and then missed your court date, but not initially.
So, if they call again, I'd suggest you just tell them you're reporting it to the police and don't call you again, and hang up on them. AND UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES GIVE THEM ANY CREDIT CARD OR BANK INFO!!!!!
