WARNING!! If you do a debt settlement program , i hope you have a couple of thousand ready for the settlement. Discover will not wait as most of your cards wont either for 30-36 months. Say you have 30,000 in debt, you better have 13-15000 ready to settle within 12 months because after that, more than likely you will get sued!! I did these debt settlement companies for a few months before i came to my senses!!! If you have anything over 20,000 in debt just file for BK, it was the best decision of my life!! And if you don't want to file the big BK, then make sure you can pull the money from somewhere because it will help you speed the process up considerably.I filed Sept. 1ST and I was finished and discharged Oct 25! I have been through hell and back since June 2008 to this point. And my lawyer told me the debt settlement companies (alot of them) are controlled by the credit card companies themselves! I personally think all these so called debt settlement programs are a BID SCAM!!! They all count on you dropping out of the program or getting sued, which ever comes first. And they get their money off the top and if you're lucky you MAY.... get a small portion of you money back.
Paul, your only response was that one company is a TASC member.
Paul, your only response was that one company is a TASC member. This was in response to a 2 part question from Davis "Do you know um, are they good".
Quick question: Why does a quick reference to TASC qualify as knowing them and/or that they are good?
Just curious.

Captain,
I agree with you about the fact that people are in a race to settle before they get sued and that it is optimal to complete settlements within 12 months if at all possible. I do not necessarily agree on your estimate of how much it will take to settle as it will depend on the trend with each specific creditor.
I totally disagree with your characterization that anyone with over 20k debt should file BK. You cannot generalize suitability for attempting settlement without knowing the facts that are unique to each individual.
Your lawyer likely did a good job in representing you in your BK. He did not however do a good job in educating you with off hand comments like settlement companies are controlled by credit card companies. That is simply not true. If your attorney were referring to credit counseling companies, than that would be closer to accurate.
I do agree that less than reputable companies have been able, up until yesterday, to charge all of their fees up front and many could care less if you settled any debt or got sued since they already got paid. In fact, most of them have been and/or are members of TASC, the very same group that paulcahill80 appears to hold in such high regard.
Mileage may vary

Hi C Davis,
Is the company called Legal Help Debt Resolution or Legal Helpers Debt Resolution? I know a company called Legal Helpers Debr Resolution but do not have a very good feedback about them. One advice from me, be careful while dealing any of them.

Someone Else,
It's very easy to use words sarcastically. I never told OP that being a member of the TASC is a huge thing. Read and try to understand.

Paul,
I will admit to being a little cranky and that my comment was indeed sarcastic, though relevant.
I do apologize for my form.

I would call 866-833-6398 they don't charge any upfront fees and you only pay them when you settle with your creditors.
